Too Good To Go and partners to bring the scale of food waste to life for International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste

October 14, 2022

28 September 2022: Too Good To Go is bringing together its community of household names in the food industry on a series of activities to mark the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste tomorrow.

The world’s largest food-saving app will be taking over the digital screens of some of its most popular food partners including LEON, SPAR, Central England Co-Op and Tortilla.

More than one third of all food produced ends up wasted. Bringing the scale of this fact to life, participating brands will be greying out a third of all food on their digital screens on 29th September - the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste.

The International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste was founded in 2019 by the United Nations and FAO to call to action the public and businesses to prioritise efforts to cut food loss and waste, in an effort to mitigate climate change and support food security and nutrition.

Alongside the screen takeovers, Tortilla will be going one step further to mark the awareness day, with a lunch event at its site on The Strand, London. On 29th September between 11:30am - 12:30pm, passers-by will be able to collect two thirds of a burrito or portion of tacos for free as Tortilla physically highlights the food waste problem.

The remaining third will be redistributed in partnership with The Charity Begins At Home and consumers will be invited to find out more about food waste as a result of the surprise. With 70% of food waste happening in our homes, Too Good To Go will be on site offering some helpful tips and tricks on how to reduce the amount of food we throw away and help keep food costs down. There will also be the chance to receive free Too Good To Go vouchers to help save more food from going to waste beyond the awareness day.

Sophie Trueman, Managing Director UK & Ireland for Too Good To Go says,

“We’re so pleased to have so many of our partners join us to mark the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste this year. Reducing the amount of food we throw away has never been more timely in the midst of growing concerns over food prices and the climate, making this year’s awareness day the most vital yet. And at Too Good To Go, we’re all about reducing food waste and in doing so, enabling people to access quality food in a more affordable way, and in a way that does right by our planet too. I’m looking forward to seeing how these activities will help to inspire the public and businesses alike to join us and take action against food waste.”
