Explainer: What on earth is a “B Corp”?

This month, you may have noticed a lot of the B Corp Certification symbol around.

March is B Corp month, which might explain why.

But what actually is a B Corp, and why do businesses with a B Corp accreditation make such a big deal of it? Allow this five-minute explainer to fill you in.

B Corp is the only business certification that measures a company’s entire social and environmental performance.

Certified B Corps are legally required to consider the impact their business has on their employees, customers, partner businesses, and the planet.

In B Corp’s own words, certified B Corporations have to meet “the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose”.

The overall mission? To harness the power of business to create a better world.

As time goes by, it becomes more and more clear that society’s problems can’t be solved by governments and not-for-profits alone. We need businesses to use their profits and growth to contribute towards society; to transform the global economy to benefit all people, communities and the planet.

The B Corp Movement’s vision is using business as a force for good to create an inclusive, equitable and regenerative world.

The B Corp certification allows businesses and consumers to draw a line in the sand, identifying which environmental and social standards businesses should be aiming for in order to have a positive impact on the world around them.

In short: when you buy something from a B Corp, you can do it with the confidence that you’re funding good, not harm.

Too Good To Go achieved B Corp certification in 2019.

From the moment Too Good To Go came to be, we carried the ethos that it’s possible to do good through business and be a business that does good.

By fighting food waste, our app generates profit. This, in turn, allows us to power our food saving movement: we raise awareness of food waste through marketing campaigns like ‘Look, Smell, Taste, Don’t Waste’, we save food from being wasted through our app, and we provide meaningful employment to almost 1,300 people across 17 countries.

THIS YEAR, WE ARE RECERTIFYING AS A B CORP AND WE’RE READY TO DO MORE

We see certifying as a B Corp as the start of the journey, not the end. We are still working tirelessly to inspire and empower individuals, businesses, and governments to fight food waste together. We’re all responsible for our future - so we want to create as much positive change in the world as we can, together.
